P-phrases or P-statements (short for Precautionary Statements) form part of the Globally Harmonized System of Classification and Labelling of Chemicals (GHS). They are intended to form a set of standardized phrases giving advice about the correct handling of chemical substances and mixtures, which can be translated into different languages. From December 2010 they will gradually substitute S-phrases which will completely disappear by June 2017.

Precautionary statements are assigned a unique code, consisting of one letter, “P”, and three figures, the first of which refers to one of the 5 types of statements:

  • P1xy for general precautions
  • P2xy for prevention precautions
  • P3xy for response precautions
  • P4xy for storage precautions
  • P5xy for disposal precautions
